Healing from the Heart

The centre of a flower, the heart of a flower does not break. It is only the outer, external layers that get broken by life but the centre remains whole.

Healing comes from within and if we enter into our own hearts, we can perhaps, with practice, start to experience a place of wholeness. We can discover a place in which we are whole rather than remaining trapped in a place where we are broken.

I have suffered trauma, I have worked for a number of years with those that have suffered trauma. I have sat with them while they have experienced the most unbearable feelings, held these feelings for them when it was necessary and helped them in various ways towards their recovery. What I have come to realise is that trauma does not go away, traumatic events have a way of returning to haunt us, the effects of past traumatic events continue to live in the body, they reignite and burn through us time and time again, they are after all our experience.

Trauma is experienced by the very humanness of who we are, the person we relate to and recognise and the one we identify with. Trauma is like a deep scar that has never really healed, we can continue to cover it, treat it or ignore it but like a scar it remains.

I believe that if we can go into the heart and look at these traumatic events from a place of stillness, love and wholeness we can perhaps separate ourselves from the one who identifies with these feelings and they just might be easier to bare.

It works for me, I’m not suggesting it would work for everyone but to try is to know. I have come to terms with some of the things that have happened to me, I have watched as the observer, detached in a way from the event. Yes they can come back at times, times I’m not prepared, it was only the other day I found myself in tears, but I know where to go, I know where I can make sense of these feelings.

I feel it’s in our identifying with traumatic events that prevents us from moving on. They won’t ever go away, after all we are human, these things happened to us and won’t unhappen. But if we can allow ourselves time in the heart, to acknowledge these happenings, view them as an observer, as well acknowledging and sitting with the feelings they bring we might start to free ourselves a little.

I believe it’s the heart that holds the key to healing, the core of our being that is timeless and constant, the place that was there before the events happened and the place that remains whole.

I believe healing of any type comes from inside, we have the potential to heal ourselves if that is what is meant to be, we have the potential to be whole.

Finding Ourselves in our Brokenness

Often we have to have been broken to find ourselves, have had something happen to us that has caused cracks. These cracks are to big to fill, these cracks leave us wide open and vulnerable.

When we crack, when we are damaged we are more inclined to look inside to see how we can put ourselves back together again. Looking at the damaged object, we consider our purpose and in doing so question how we can repair ourselves in order to serve this purpose.

To find ourselves we have often been hurt, fearful or confused by life events, these occurrences leading us to our own centres, leading us to our very being.

Does the breaking of the heart cause it to open, maybe because in my experience those who know themselves have been broken, broken into so many pieces that they have to work hard to put themselves back together.

This is often when we find something outside of ourselves, God, divinity, universal energy, whatever you want to call it, but making this connection is often the glue that makes us whole again as piece by piece, portion by portion, we put ourselves back together again.

Time Out

IMG_5950

I have been taking time out, I’ve been recovering from my house move I suppose and have felt the need just to be. It’s crucial we take time just to be, to put life on hold and be with ourselves for this is where we discover who we are, this is the place we discover our own value.

In all that we do it is important to value ourselves because we are giving of ourselves constantly, and if we don’t value ourselves, then what we give is of little value.

People who work with others, in any capacity but especially on an emotional level have a responsibility to work with themselves, look after themselves and make sure that what they give is of the best quality. We can only ever give what we have, what is within us and if our energy is depleted then it makes sense that what we give is of lesser value.

I think we all expect the person we are going to visit, be it a doctor, accountant, spiritual guru to know what they are talking about, to be on top notch form, to be able to help us in what ever way is necessary. How can they do this if they don’t help themselves, how can they do this if they are racing against time, their own issues and not taking enough time out for themselves.

Yet how many people do we know that actually do this, be it with a supervisor, mentor, guide or just by themselves. How often do we intend to meditate, take a day out or have a treatment just for the good of our souls.

How often is it we actually listen, listen to ourselves or to what the universe is trying to tell us. How often is it we go inside and repair, clean and restore our precious selves. If our bodies are the homes in which our spirits live, isn’t it right we clean and bring them back to health regularly.

My time out can be alone or catching up with a good friend, it can be in silent contemplation or through inspired discussion with a like minded soul. It doesn’t matter how I take my time out, as long as I do, as long as I’m good to myself.

I can only give what I have, I have to love myself and treat myself well in order to be able to give that out. When I do I shine, I sparkle and I can share the energy of that freshness with others.

A Space in Time

I found the space I needed,

though I didn’t know it at the time.

A space to clear my thoughts away,

a space to give me time.

I didn’t know I was searching,

it quite took me by surprise.

I thought I needed people near,

such space I’d never tried.

But I’m finding myself in openness,

time is mending my heart.

I know that life will wait for me,

be waiting when I start.

I’ve found a little space in time,

a safe space for recovery.

I now know that I’ve needed this,

just took me a while to see.

I thought this place would be boring,

that people I’d need to find.

But I’ve found a piece of heaven here,

it’s so gentle on my mind.
