Oh, to sail and wander the seas
by sailing boat or steam.
Just sailing along on the water,
my life would be a dream.
To bathe with all the sea creatures,
take showers in the rain.
While living the life of a sailor,
going out to sea again.
So pipe me out of the harbours,
send me up to the nest.
Give me a compass in my hand,
as the sea presents its test.
Spotting new land on a horizon,
seeing cliffs as they loom.
Putting a message in my bottle,
right under a silvery moon.

I’m on the look out for a handsome Canadian sailor for you! When I find him I’ll set his compass Liza-ward 🙂

Magical! It reminds me of John Masefield’s poem Sea Fever… I also like Spike Milligan’s parody of it:
I must go down to the sea again,
to the lonely sea and the sky;
I left my shoes and socks there –
I wonder if they’re dry?

Love John’s poems, one of my favourites not heard Spikes before but I’m liking it 😉

I love Spike’s work. I grew up on it – and a lot of other both serious and humorous poetry. My mum got all starry eyed when she recited and read poetry to us.

What I know of Spike is very good, hilarious actually especially his epitaph! I grew up in a house full of books, poetry, literature and art. A fabulous childhood 😊

I love it when someone tells me they had a good childhood. It’s not fashionable these days to admit to that 😉

Mine was wonderful, we had our ups and downs and money was tight but there was lots of love, culture, laughs and food 😉

It sounds a bit like my childhood, except you didn’t mention the tree-climbing 🙂

Or scrumping or riding around for hours on end on my chopper!

It seems we had the same childhood after all, except choppers weren’t on the scene until I started noticing B.O.Y.S (ugh) 🙂
